In recent times, the extremely dynamic progress in
the mass production technology of data storage
materials has resulted in a huge increase in their
capacity and speed. It is especially noticed with the
devices that use the enhanced IDE standard. EIDE
is at present the most common standard controller
for devices like hard disks, CD-Rom drives, CD-RW
drives and DVD drives.
The A1200 has a built in hard disk controller based on the IDE standard, however, only the PIO 0 mode has been implemented, which is the slowest of all PIO modes and has a maximum data transfer rate of about 3 megabytes per second. The Power Flyer Fast EIDE interface has been designed to fit inside the Amiga 1200, in its standard casing or in any Tower type casing. The controller works with two IDE ports, which can accomodate upto four devices. As well as supporting the older PIO 0 mode, the Power Flyer has facilities for PIO 3 and PIO 4 modes. In PIO 4 mode, the Power Flyer has a maximum transfer rate of 16.6 megabytes per second and can use hard disks that are larger than 4.3 gigabytes in size without the need to change the file system. Devices added are automatically recognised and the Power Flyer negotiates the highest possible data transfer rate with the attached device. Using the Power Flyer negates the need for IDE Fix and uses the standard SCSI.device for drive operation. Amiga Format gave the Power Flyer an incredible 98% in a magazine review, issue 113.
